I had a really intense workout session this morning.
My personal trainer – Paul – put me through my paces as usual.
And it was tough going!
Sixty minutes of non-stop pull ups… dips… situps… squat jumps and burpees (yes that is a thing!)
But the benefits of that painful hour each morning are extraordinary…
As soon as I’ve showered, endorphins flood my body… relieving pain and anxiety.
I feel heightened awareness, clearer focus and plenty of energy for the day ahead.
Over the long term, working out has massively reduced the aches and pains I get from sitting at my desk… and allowed me to eat my favourite foods without putting on weight.
What’s MOST remarkable, though, is this…
I spent almost TWENTY YEARS thinking about doing something like this!
Year after year, I felt guilty about being unfit, constantly watching my weight, and groaning in pain when I worked at the computer too much.
Yet I didn’t act on it.
You see, there’s always an invisible line between thinking about doing something and actually doing it.
But invisible as it may be…
And as simple to cross as it may be…
Sometimes it feels as solid and unpassable as a brick wall.
So for decades, I did NOTHING.
Until… one day…
I DID ONE SMALL THING
And that one small thing was to go up to Paul in the park, after he finished with a client, and enquire about his services.
From that one tiny act, a whole new life emerged for me, where I got amazing result after amazing result in my fitness and mental wellbeing.
What I had done in that brief moment was to cross the ‘ACTIVATION THRESHOLD’.
This is a term to describe the smallest possible amount of energy or effort required to start a task or make a change.
It’s borrowed from the field of chemistry, where a reaction needs a tiny bit of heat or energy to start.
Once it begins, it continues naturally.
The same applies to human behaviour…
The Real Reason You Sometimes Get ‘Stuck’
There are two parts of your brain involved in making a life change.
The prefrontal cortex (responsible for planning and decision-making) has to override the limbic system (which seeks comfort and avoids pain).
At first, the limbic system dominates.
After all, none of us – deep down – want to move out of our comfort zone into somewhere unfamiliar, unsettling and potentially painful.
That’s why starting something feels hard even when – in your rational mind – you WANT to do it.
For instance, you might WANT to get fit and go for a run each day.
But you have to override the intense desire to stay in bed, or sit drinking coffee while listening to the radio.
However…
As soon as you put trainers on and go outside, you’ll find that the inertia flips.
Because the same brain chemistry that resists effort suddenly REWARDS your continuation of effort.
It’s taking the first few steps of your run that triggers this shift, and creates a chain reaction of reward for each further action you take.
By the time you finish, you’re positively BUZZING with feelgood chemicals and a desire to DO IT AGAIN!
The same goes for starting or running a home business.
There’s a part of your brain that does not want to get going, for numerous reasons which might include:-
- You’re afraid of failure…
- You’re intimidated by the scale of the ultimate goal…
- You’re riddled with self-doubt…
- You’re worried about making the wrong choice…
- You have decision paralysis about what that best first step should be.
But these are purely psychological barriers thrown up by your own mind.
And you need to override them.
You can do that by understanding firstly that it’s not the whole task that’s scaring you, it’s the act of starting.
Next, you must force yourself to make that first tiny step.
It could be as simple as opening your laptop and writing down a goal.
Once you cross that ‘activation threshold’, you’ll find that each subsequent step becomes easier – and not only that, but you’ll feel an inner drive to reach the next goal.
