I only wanted a coffee, but ended up in…

by | Apr 29, 2026 | Blog | 0 comments

I’ll tell you what makes me feel old these days…

YOUNG PEOPLE!

But it’s not because of their fresh faces, smooth skin and boundless energy.

It’s because of their clothes and hair.

This thought struck me the other day, as I was waiting for a takeaway coffee in a trendy cafe in East London.

Honestly – it felt like I’d time-travelled to 1985.

All around me were young guys with curly black mullet hair-dos and thick bushy moustaches!

They could have stepped right out of that Scousers sketch that Harry Enfield used to do in his TV show.

(“Eh! Calm down! Calm down! Eh! Eh!”)

What made me feel old was that I was witnessing a long-term cultural cycle.

Because it seems like every 30-40 years, the wheel returns to the beginning, and there’s a revival of clothes, hair styles and even attitudes from the past that you thought were dead.

So I’m now old enough to witness the 80s revival!

Maybe I’ll even live to see the 2020’s make a comeback in 40 years time.

This cyclical cultural phenomenon is happening with technology too…

Young people are beginning to ditch smartphones for ‘dumb’ phones with no internet connection.

They’re writing in paper diaries and playing board games.

They’re opting out of platforms like Facebook and X…

And they’re buying CDs, records and paperbacks instead of relying on Spotify, Kindle and YouTube.

In fact, recent studies show a clear and growing backlash against the online world across the general population.

Around 62% of people report digital burnout and 70% feel drained after extended time online.

Behaviour is shifting too…

One in 5 users has deleted a social media app in the past year…. around 50% are actively turning off notifications…. and large numbers are searching for ways to enjoy a more meaningful online experience.

This digital fatigue is creating a MASSIVE OPPORTUNITY for you.

The New Online Revolution

The trends clearly show that readers are increasingly turning their backs on the old style of social media that has dominated the internet for the past 15 years.

  • They’re rejecting that endless scroll through AI slop, troll comments, Russian bots and sponsored posts.
  • They’re seeking an escape from manipulative algorithms that deliberately make them addicted to their phones…
  • They don’t want to endure daily anxiety and depression from doomscrolling.
  • And they no longer want to compare themselves all day long to rich, cosmetically-enhanced influencers.

Instead, they’re actively seeking out independent voices they can trust.

By that I mean real humans with distinctive opinions and experiences.

This is good news for you because it means that you no longer need to hustle on social media to run a successful business.

And you don’t need to amass thousands of followers or make viral content that gets hundreds of likes and reshares.

In this online revolution, you can succeed simply by being a unique voice with a point of view!

It doesn’t matter if you are an amateur solo operation with no budget – in fact, it’s an ADVANTAGE.

And you only need a small number of followers in order to make money.

You see, rather than follow a person’s social media feed on some noisy, cluttered public forum…

Internet users increasingly prefer to receive information from that person directly to their inbox.

Which is where you could step in.

For instance, you could create an email newsletter about a specialist niche subject that interests you…

Filter out all the crappy, commonplace info to select ONLY the best nuggets…

Use AI to turn it into a short, personal weekly email…

Then build a small, dedicated audience of like-minded readers who will look forward to your messages hitting their inbox.

To make money, you could:-

  • Create your own digital products (tools, guides and courses) to sell to this audience…
  • Recommend affiliate products that are relevant to their interests, and get paid a commission each time.
  • Offer ad space and sponsorship from businesses.

Perhaps there’s even money to be made from a niche email service in which you help people reduce their screen time and find offline ways to improve their wealth, wellbeing and happiness.

This Booming Platform Is Bang On-Trend

As millions turn away from old school social media, it’s no wonder that Substack is exploding in popularity!

As you probably know from my previous emails, this platform allows you to post content online for private paying subscribers, which also gets sent to them via email.

For the new breed of internet users, this is IDEAL.

Because it allows them to get advice, insights and news without relying on their smartphone, or needing to scroll through masses of content they don’t need or even want to see.

Which is why Substack is currently getting 47.6 million NEW visitors every month.

And it’s why content creators are ditching their old website and social media accounts… and flocking to Substack in their droves!

I don’t blame them.

Everything a content-creator could possibly require can be done on this ONE platform…

From finding customers… to getting them signed up to an email list…. to processing their payments.

So it has quickly gone from being a niche tool used by a handful of savvy writers… to one of the most talked-about income opportunities on the internet.

For example…

  • Emma Gannon started sharing self-help content on Substack and within 18 months was on a six-figure income.
  • The FI Weekly is a personal finance Substack that got 4,200 free subscribers in just 8 months. By month 10 he was generating £2,400 a month in recurring revenue.
  • Karen Cherry earned £33,000 from direct subscriptions alone in her first three years, sharing Substack marketing advice.

Now I’ve even started my own Substack adventure.

I’m in the process of putting the What Really Makes Money service on the platform, where I can share top level home business blueprints, strategies and tool recommendations with private members.

My aim is to launch the premium version in late May. But at the moment I’m publishing classics from the archive for free so that I can get used to the platform.

You can take a look at what I’ve done so far, and sign up to the free content HERE.

And if possible, leave comments beneath the posts that you like the most. It would be great to get the conversation rolling!

This could also be a good opportunity for you to check out Substack for yourself (if you haven’t already).

How You Could Profit from the Substack Boom

As well as signing up to What Really Makes Money, see if you can find other creators sharing info that you might find enlightening!

It could be in any area of life or business that interests you, or in which you’ve had experience.

Side hustles… home brewing… gardening… caring for elderly parents… DIY home renovation… decluttering… pub management… website design.

Pick a bunch that appeal, by creators who publish regularly.

Sign up to their Substack and read their emails to get an understanding of what they share, how they share it, and how they express their unique take on the world.

Then ask yourself: could I do something similar, but with my own spin?”

Hopefully this will give you some inspiration…

Because with the help of AI, you could potentially use Substack to start, and grow, a profitable digital info publishing business, all on one platform, without any tech skills or creative flair!

You don’t even need your own products at first because you can get paid simply for sharing content.

This could be your best opportunity to capitalise on a major new cultural cycle – and get into a fast growing publishing platform at the ground level.

Exciting times!
