I’ve written recently about the flood of online data…
There’s just so much information out there now, from so many sources, that it can be overwhelming for anyone seeking reliable advice.
Which means there’s a demand for trustworthy ‘curators’ who will deliver essential information about a topic in an easy, simple, digestible way.
For example, I’ve shown you how email newsletters can help you cut through the noise for a niche audience.
But here’s something you can try that’s quick and could generate a nice extra income.
It’s a way you can make short PDF documents using AI for the planning, writing and design…. then sell them online for £10, £20, even £50 a time.
All without stocking or delivering anything yourself!
Let me show you…
How to Profit From PDF Farming
‘PDF farming’ is where you create and sell short digital downloads in PDF format that help people solve a specific problem or achieve a clear goal.
Examples include checklists, how-to guides, mini workbooks and cheat sheets, aimed at small niche audiences who are actively searching for practical solutions online.
For example…
- A CV Checklist for Jobseekers Over 50
- A 7-Day Anti-Inflammatory Meal Plan for Joint Pain Sufferers
- The 5 best part-time online income generators for stay-at-home mums
These PDFs are typically between 3-30 pages long, and sold on websites like Etsy or Gumroad for under £50.
There they can become stand-alone products which generate multiple passive income streams without you doing any delivery or payment processing yourself.
The income might only be a trickle at first, but the more PDFs you upload, the more that can turn into a steady flow.
However, they can also be used to draw people into any kind of business as low-priced, easy-purchase options.
For instance, someone might buy a PDF guide for £20, after which you could promote a higher priced course or subscription service as an upsell.
So you could use these PDFs to grow any business – for example building an email subscription list or gathering customers to whom you can sell other products.
There are huge benefits to this model:
- Low Entry Barrier – No need for upfront investment, fancy software or learning a new skill. Using AI you could get a PDF written and designed in less than an hour.
- No inventory or fulfilment – Files are delivered automatically online.
- Almost 100% profit margins – Apart from small platform and payment fees (taken only after the sale is made).
- Scalable – Once one product is created and selling, it’s easy to add more or build bundles of multiple PDFs.
- Faceless business model – No need to appear on camera, use your voice, or build a personal brand.
Works with AI – ChatGPT can help generate ideas, outlines, and even draft content.
But before I take you through the steps, a word of caution…
Some unscrupulous biz opp marketers are flogging shady versions of this model where you create a PDF about how to make money from PDFs.
In other words, “Buy this PDF about how to sell this same PDF to others!”
This is just a dodgy MLM scheme, where you don’t really sell anything of value.
So be wary of buying any system that offers this as a method of making money, and don’t be tempted to do the same thing.
Instead, I recommend you stick to creating a practical and useful document that will help somebody achieve something meaningful!
Okay, let’s look at how it’s done…
Step 1 – Identify a Niche
A good starting point is to think about what you have personally searched for online (for instance on Google or social media). It could have been…
- Overcoming an illness or injury
- Finding an income opportunity
- Getting tips on a successful interview or writing a CV
- Improving a skill at work or home
- Building or making something
- Saving money
- Choosing a holiday
And if nothing springs instantly to mind, you can use ChatGPT, giving it this prompt:
➡️ “I’m starting a PDF publishing business where I will be creating and selling niche solutions in the form of PDFs. Please give me the top 10 most profitable niches right now.”
ChatGPT could give you something like this:
1. Online Education & E-Learning PDFs such as study guides, course materials, and cheat sheets are in high demand among students and professionals seeking flexible learning options.
2. Health, Fitness & Wellness With a growing emphasis on longevity and preventive health, consumers are seeking resources like meal plans, workout routines, and wellness trackers.
3. Personal Finance & Investing. As individuals aim to improve their financial literacy, there’s a surge in demand for budgeting templates, investment guides, and debt reduction plans in PDF format.
4. Productivity & Time Management. Professionals and students alike are seeking tools to enhance productivity. PDF planners, to-do lists, and time-blocking templates are popular products in this niche.
5. DIY & Crafting. The crafting community values detailed patterns and tutorials. PDFs providing step-by-step guides for knitting, woodworking, or digital crafts are highly sought after.
6. Social Media & Content Creation. Content creators are constantly looking for resources to streamline their workflow. PDFs offering content calendars, caption templates, and branding guides can be lucrative.
7. Career Development & Job Search. With the job market’s competitiveness, resources like resume templates, cover letter guides, and interview preparation checklists in PDF form are in demand.
8. Digital Marketing & Entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs and marketers seek comprehensive guides on SEO, email marketing, and business planning. PDFs that provide actionable strategies can cater to this audience.
9. Mental Health & Mindfulness. As awareness around mental well-being grows, resources like mindfulness journals, anxiety trackers, and self-reflection prompts in PDF format are gaining popularity.
10. Wedding & Event Planning. Couples and event planners often seek checklists, budgeting tools, and timeline planners. PDFs offering structured planning resources can be a valuable asset in this niche.
These are good but they are a little broad, so consider them as starting points only.
Take one that resonates with you, but then drill down to find a specific problem or goal that someone might be searching for online.
Here’s how…
Step 2 – Identify a Specific Problem
You need to find a specific problem that your PDF can help with. For example:
- “I can’t stick to a meal plan.”
- “I don’t know how to start weight training at 60+.”
- “I can’t stay motivated to work on a project.
Or think about measurable goals. For example…
- “I need to earn a consistent side income of £500+ per month”
- “I want to reduce my levels of bad cholesterol in 6 months”
- “I want to get more than 1000 Instagram followers”
To help you, I recommend you go to ChatGPT and use this prompt:
➡️ “Please list 5 – 10 problems most people have when it comes to [INSERT NICHE, eg ‘Productivity and Time Management]. Go deep and specific with this.”
Chat GPT will answer with options…

Examples in the niche of ‘productivity and time management’ might include:
- Chronic Overwhelm from Task Overload
- Inability to Stick to Routines
- Poor Estimation of Time
- Getting Distracted too Easily
- Difficulty Saying No and Overcommitting
- Struggling with Transitions Between Tasks
Choose one focused issue for your first PDF (don’t worry you can always create more around the other problems and goals within your chosen niche).
Step 3 – Plan the PDF
The basic structure of a problem-solving PDF would be:
- Title page
- Short introduction (what this is, what they’ll get)
- Main content (steps, tips, checklist, worksheet, plan, chart)
- Summary / next steps
- Call to action (if linking to more resources or products)
Again, ChatGPT can help you in seconds if you use a prompt like this:
➡️ “Please outline for me a PDF for the above pain points and come up with 10 engaging titles for the PDF that are solution focused. The PDF should be actionable and easy to digest. Starts with the basics of what someone completely new to this topic would need to learn about, walking through various stages and sections before concluding with deeper in depth knowledge on this niche.”
Or you can ask ChatGPT:
➡️ “Create a 5-page outline for a PDF that helps [niche audience] to [solve problem].”
For example: “Create a 5-page outline for a PDF that helps stressed full time workers make time to work on side hustle projects.”
ChatGPT will produce a first draft that you can then edit and restructure as needed.
Just give it more prompts to adjust, add or delete elements – or you can paste it onto a Word Document and make some edits yourself, then paste it back into ChatGPT to tidy up.
Now it’s time to design it…
Step 4 – Create the PDF with Gamma
As a shortcut you can use Gamma.app, an AI design tool that will turn your document into a stunning PDF based on a simple prompt.
It’s free to use and brilliant for making a high value, slick-looking PDF, including infographics, charts, illustrations and other types of content.
You can then export this as a ready-to-sell document,
Step 5 – Sell Online
Begin by listing your product on Beacons.AI or Gumroad.
Both platforms allow you to sell unlimited digital products without paying money to get started – they’ll just take a 9% fee after the sale (Beacons) or 10% (Gumroad).
When you list your PDF, make sure to include:
- A clear title – Describe the outcome or benefit e.g. “CV Checklist for Over-50 Jobseekers”
- Brief description – Explain what it helps with and who it’s for, eg. “A 5-step printable checklist for over-50s returning to work, covering key updates for modern CVs.”
- Key benefits in bullet points – eg “Helps you avoid common CV mistakes”. “Designed specifically for jobseekers aged 50+”, “No jargon or fluff – just what you need”.
- Sample page images – Create 2–3 preview screenshots to showcase the content
- Relevant tags and keywords – These help people find your product via search e.g. “job search, CV help, career change, over 50, printables, checklists”
Start with a price range of £5–£30 depending on length, depth, and usefulness.
For ultra-short documents you might charge £5-£10+.
For more detailed guides £25+ is common.
It’s also possible to combine related PDFs into higher-value ‘bundles’.
Again, nothing is set in stone at this point, so you can test different prices and adjust based on sales and feedback as you become a little more experienced.
If you like this idea, then I recommend you set aside an hour this week to go through the steps and get your first PDF created.
