AI Olympics: ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude

by | May 7, 2024 | Blog | 0 comments

We all know that AI can be a great tool for creating written content.

For instance you can use it to research, plan and write email newsletters, blog posts and social media posts.

And you can also use it to structure and write sales copy, for example Facebook ads, sales promotions, Amazon and Etsy listings…

The most well-known of the tools is ChatGPT, which was the first to hit the market for public consumption.

Trained by OpenAI, ChatGPT generates human-like text based on a range of prompts.

It’s highly versatile, capable of answering questions, assisting with writing tasks, and researching a plethora of topics.

Since it launched, it has taken leaps and bounds in its capabilities, with a paid-for level (ChatGPT-4) and integration with Dall-E, allowing you to make images like the one at the top of this email.

That said, it cannot access real time data and it has a cut off point in knowledge that is currently January 2022 on the free version and April 2023 on the paid version.

In the meantime, its rivals have also improved over the last year…

  • Gemini (formerly known as Bard): Developed by Google, Bard is aimed at helping users understand complex information and generate creative content, leveraging Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA). Unlike Chat GPT it can access up-to-date information through Google Search,
  • Claude: Created by Anthropic, Claude is designed to provide clear and contextually aware responses – it’s also able to digest, process and summarise large chunks of text, It cannot access real time info and its database was last updated in August 2023.

So with the playing field levelling out somewhat, I thought I would give all three of these tools the same ‘bench test’ prompts, and compare their responses so that you have an idea of their respective strengths and weaknesses.

A few things to note:

  • I am using the FREE versions of each tool, not the subscription-based levels.
  • These are basic prompts to test the levels of response – for the best results you need a series of prompts, as well as much more data about you, the reader/customer and your product

Okay, let’s start the fight!

ROUND ONE – CONTENT TASK

First up, a challenge to come with a piece of content.

PROMPT: Write me an issue of my email newsletter about the best healing medicinal herbs you can grow in British gardens in Spring and Summer, in an authoritative first person tone but laced with gentle humour and plenty of enthusiasm, speaking to my target reader directly as an individual.

Yours in greenery and good vibes, [Your Name]

PROS – Good voice, sounds very natural and human, light and humorous as requested, includes 5 decent herb recommendations and sounds like it is being written by one person.

CONS – Completely overdoes the ‘British’ element, which is supposed to be unspoken. The tips are good but lack some practical applications. There is no encouragement at the end of replies or feedback.

Subject Line: Your Garden’s Healing Bounty 🌿💚

Greetings, my green-thumbed friend!

As the warmer months grace us with their vibrant presence, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and transform our gardens into verdant apothecaries brimming with nature’s remedies. Trust me, there’s nothing quite as rewarding as plucking a freshly grown herb, inhaling its fragrant aroma, and knowing that you’ve harnessed the power of ancient plant wisdom right in your own backyard.

So, let’s dive into the world of healing herbs that will not only add a pop of colour to your garden but also serve as natural allies in your quest for well-being.

  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Ah, the purple prince of herbs! Lavender is more than just a delightful addition to your garden’s colour palette. Its fragrant flowers have been used for centuries to promote relaxation and calm the mind. A simple lavender sachet under your pillow or a soothing cup of lavender tea can work wonders after a long, stressful day. Plus, it’s a bee’s delight!
  • Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) This daisy-like herb is a true gift from nature’s pharmacy. Chamomile’s gentle, apple-like aroma is instantly recognizable, and its flowers have been used for ages to brew a soothing tea that can alleviate stomach troubles and promote restful sleep. Imagine sipping a warm cup of chamomile tea while basking in the golden rays of a summer evening – pure bliss!
  • Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) Peppermint is the cool, refreshing cousin of the mint family, and boy, does it pack a punch! Its invigorating aroma can instantly clear your senses and uplift your mood. Brew a steaming cup of peppermint tea to soothe an upset stomach or simply enjoy its crisp, minty flavor on a warm day. Plus, it’s an absolute must-have for homemade mojitos – just saying!
  • Calendula (Calendula officinalis) Also known as the “pot marigold,” this sunny little flower is a true gem in the herbal world. Calendula’s vibrant orange blooms have been used for centuries to promote skin healing and soothe irritations. Infuse its petals in a carrier oil or make a homemade salve – your skin will thank you for this gentle, nourishing treat.
  • Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) Don’t let its unassuming appearance fool you – thyme packs a powerful punch when it comes to herbal remedies. This evergreen shrub has been revered for its antibacterial and expectorant properties, making it a go-to remedy for respiratory issues. Plus, its earthy, herbaceous flavour is a culinary delight in savoury dishes and marinades.

Now, my dear gardeners, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, grab your trowels, and start cultivating your very own herbal haven. Remember, growing these healing herbs is not just about tending to plants; it’s about nurturing a connection with nature and embracing the ancient wisdom that has been passed down through generations.

Happy planting, and may your garden overflow with the bountiful gifts of Mother Nature’s healing touch!

Warmly, [Your Name]

P.S. Don’t forget to share your herbal adventures with me! I’d love to hear about your successes, failures (we all have them!), and any hilarious tales of gardening mishaps. After all, laughter is the best medicine, second only to a freshly brewed pot of chamomile tea.

PROS – The practical advice is better than Chat GPTs, with the latin names of the plants and more practical tips on how the reader might use it. The PS asks for the reader to reply and give feedback.

CONS – The voice isn’t as good as ChatGPTs – it is too verbose and stuffy. Also, about 2/3 of the way through it forgets that the email is to a specific reader and talks to “my dear gardeners”.

SCORE: 8/10.

Subject: Springing into Health: Herbs for Your Healing Garden!

Hello there, fellow plant whisperer!

Spring has sprung (huzzah!), and with it comes the urge to dig our fingers into the earth and cultivate a little bit of magic. But this year, let’s not just grow gorgeous blooms – let’s create a haven of homegrown healing with some fantastic medicinal herbs!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Medicinal herbs? Sounds a bit… witchy, doesn’t it?” Not a bit of it! These little green powerhouses have been used for centuries to soothe what ails us, all without the scary side effects of mystery potions.

Here are some of my favourites to get you started:

  • Chamomile: This calming superstar is perfect for brewing a cup of tea to ease away stress, soothe tummy troubles, and lull you off to a gentle sleep. Plus, those delicate daisy-like flowers look positively delightful dancing in the breeze!
  • Calendula: Don’t be fooled by its cheerful orange blooms – calendula is a champion for wound healing and reducing inflammation. Think of it as sunshine for your skin! Plus, it self-seeds readily, so you’ll have a constant supply of this golden goodness.
  • Peppermint: Who doesn’t love a good cup of mint tea? But beyond its refreshing taste, peppermint can settle an upset stomach and invigorate your senses. Just a word of caution, though: mint is a wanderer! Plant it in a pot to keep it from taking over your entire garden.
  • Sage: This versatile herb is a friend indeed. Gargle with sage tea for a sore throat, use it to flavour your roasts, or even burn the leaves for a natural insect repellent (though your neighbours might give you a funny look!).

Remember, a little research goes a long way! Before diving headfirst into brewing your own herbal concoctions, be sure to check the recommended uses and potential interactions with any medications you’re taking.

But trust me, with a sprinkle of sunshine, a dash of care, and these fantastic herbs, you’ll be well on your way to growing your own little slice of natural wellness.

Happy planting, and happy healing!

Warmly,

[Your Name]

P.S. If you’re a complete herb newbie, don’t worry! In our next newsletter, we’ll delve into some top tips for creating and nurturing your very own medicinal haven. Stay tuned!

PROS – the voice is decent, with a nice conversational style. Has a nice teaser at the end for the next issue.

CONS – It’s the shortest in length of the three AI results and lacks the same level of details and practical application. It assumes the reader would be surprised by medicinal herbs, but a gardening/health newsletter reader would understand this aspect.

SCORE: 6/10

Result of round one – a DRAW between Chat GPT and Claude!

PROS – Quirkily written subject line and lead that’s actually better than ChatGPT’s lead. Good call to action and a nice extra push for the product in the PS.

CONS – Needs more of a detailed picture of the problems and goals in the lead. Bullets focus on the features not the benefits.

SCORE: 6/10.

Result of round one – CLAUDE is the WINNER!

ROUND THREE – RESEARCH TASK

Let’s finish with a research prompt.

PROMPT: Act as my researcher. Find for me the latest information about ways that people in the UK can make themselves energy secure, including solar panels, water storage, generators, etc. Include costs.”

  • Chat GPT
  • Solar Panels:
  • Options: Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels are the most common type used in the UK. They convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used to power homes.
  • Costings: The cost of installing solar panels varies depending on factors such as the size of the system and the quality of the panels. On average, installation costs can range from £4,000 to £8,000 for a typical domestic system. However, prices have been decreasing in recent years.
  • Battery Storage Systems:
  • Options: Battery storage systems store excess energy generated by solar panels for later use, typically during periods of low sunlight or high energy demand.
  • Costings: The cost of battery storage systems varies depending on factors such as capacity and brand. On average, installation costs can range from £2,000 to £6,000 for a typical domestic system.
  • Wind Turbines:
  • Options: Small-scale wind turbines can be installed on residential properties to generate electricity from wind energy.
  • Costings: The cost of installing a wind turbine varies depending on factors such as size, location, and installation requirements. On average, installation costs can range from £10,000 to £30,000 for a small-scale domestic turbine.
  • Generator Backup:
  • Options: Diesel or petrol generators can provide backup power during grid outages or emergencies.
  • Costings: The cost of generators varies depending on factors such as size, power output, and fuel type. On average, small residential generators can cost anywhere from £500 to £2,000 or more.
  • Water Storage and Harvesting:
  • Options: Rainwater harvesting systems collect rainwater from roofs or other surfaces for non-potable uses such as irrigation, toilet flushing, and laundry.
  • Costings: The cost of rainwater harvesting systems varies depending on factors such as system size, installation complexity, and water usage requirements. On average, installation costs can range from £1,000 to £5,000 for a domestic system.

PROS – Chat GPT delivers the information required in my 3 suggestions of what to cover, but it also understood That I was looking for more, so it covered battery storage systems and wind turbines too, which I had not even mentioned. Good clear presentation of the information.

CONS – This info would need verifying with a manual Google search.

SCORE: 8/10

  • Claude
  • Solar Panels: Options:
  • Rooftop solar panels: These photovoltaic (PV) systems can be installed on the roofs of residential or commercial buildings to generate electricity from sunlight.
  • Ground-mounted solar panels: Larger-scale solar panel systems can be installed on the ground, typically in open spaces or fields.

Costings:

  • The average cost of a 4kW rooftop solar panel system in the UK ranges from £5,000 to £8,000, including installation.
  • Ground-mounted solar panel systems can cost significantly more, depending on the size and scale of the project.
  • Water Storage: Options:
  • Rainwater harvesting systems: These systems collect and store rainwater from roofs or other surfaces for later use in non-potable applications, such as gardening or flushing toilets.
  • Water butts: Smaller-scale water storage containers that collect rainwater from downpipes or gutters.

Costings:

  • Rainwater harvesting systems can range from £1,000 to £5,000, depending on the size and complexity.
  • Water butts typically cost between £50 and £200.
  • Generators: Options:
  • Diesel or petrol generators: Portable or standby generators that run on fossil fuels and can provide backup power during outages.
  • Solar generators: Portable power stations that use solar panels to charge batteries and provide renewable energy.

Costings:

  • Diesel or petrol generators can range from £500 to £5,000, depending on the size and power output.
  • Solar generators typically cost between £500 and £2,000, based on capacity and features.

Other options:

  • Wind turbines: Small-scale wind turbines can be installed on residential or commercial properties to generate electricity from wind power. Costs vary based on size and installation requirements.
  • Biomass boilers: These boilers burn organic matter, such as wood pellets or chips, to generate heat and hot water. Costs range from £5,000 to £20,000, depending on the size and type.

PROS – It gives a few more options in each one than ChatGPT, for example water butts as well as rainwater harvesting, and ground-mounted solar panels as well as rooftop. It also suggests other options – in this case wind turbines and biomass boilers (the latter not mentioned by ChatGPT).

CONS – Like ChatGPT, you would need a manual check to verify.  It would have been good if Claude had given costings to the wind turbine suggestion,

Energy Security Options for UK Households (as of April 30, 2024)

The current energy climate has many in the UK looking for ways to become more energy secure. Here’s a breakdown of some popular options:

Solar Panels:

  • Option: Convert sunlight into electricity for your home.

Water Storage:

  • Option: Collect rainwater for non-potable uses (toilet flushing, gardening).
  • Costing: Varies depending on size and complexity. Basic systems start around £200 for a water butt, larger systems with pumps and filtration can cost several thousand pounds.

Generators:

  • Option: Provides electricity during power outages. Options include petrol, diesel, or propane powered generators.
  • Costing: Ranges from £200 for basic models to over £1,000 for larger generators. Running costs depend on fuel type and usage.
  • Advantages: Offers backup power during outages, useful for essential appliances (fridges, medical equipment) during blackouts.
  • Disadvantages: Noisy operation, fumes can be a health concern, fuel costs can add up quickly, requires regular maintenance and fuel storage.

Battery Storage:

  • Option: Store excess solar energy for later use.
  • Costing: Relatively new technology, prices are coming down but still expensive. Expect to pay from £3,000 for a small battery unit.

Additional Considerations:

  • Energy efficiency upgrades: Investing in insulation, energy-efficient appliances, and LED lighting can significantly reduce overall energy consumption.
  • Green energy suppliers: Switching to a supplier that uses renewable energy sources can reduce your carbon footprint and support sustainable practices.
  • Community energy schemes: Some areas offer community-owned solar panels or battery storage solutions, which can be a cost-effective option.

PROS – This is recent info as of right now, so it’s by far the most reliable and up to date. Unlike the others it includes a link to a website to get grants. Uniquely, it also offers suggestions on reducing energy costs in other ways, including LED lighting, insulation and switching suppliers.

CONS – It doesn’t cover some of the extra suggestions made by the other two AI tools, like biomass burners, wind turbines and rain harvesting systems.

SCORE: 7/10

Result of round three – another DRAW between Chat GPT and Claude!

In Conclusion..

Running this simple test, I was surprised by how much the other AI tools have caught up to ChatGPT – in particular, Claude.

Here are some takeaways…

  • Chat GPT is still the best at writing in a personal human voice.

  • Chat GPT is best at working out what it is you are looking for, and delivering more than you request.

But…

  • Claude is more keen to pack in specific details and useful information.

  • Claude seems to have the upper hand when it comes to emphasising the benefits of products and services in sales promotions.

And before we dismiss Gemini…

  • Gemini is not only holding its own against stiff competition – it can find you the most up to date info on any topic – PLUS it seems more willing to give you resources and links to help.

Whatever disadvantages and failings there are in the results of these basic prompt tests, they can all be overcome.

  • You can always get the AI to try it again, giving it more guidance on what you want.

  • You can ask the AI to look into specific points and get it to add more detail, more practical advice, etc.

  • You can feed the AI more info about you, your product and your target customer/reader.

  • You can feed the AI with templates for things like bullets, headlines and leads, so that it produces content more in line with the style and format that you want.

  • You can use ALL three of these tools in combination to extract the best from each.

And there you have it – the AI Olympics! 🏅

If you’ve already dipped your toes into the AI writing pool with ChatGPT- that’s fantastic! But why stop there when you have two other incredible tools just waiting to be explored?

If you are new to the AI writing game, don’t worry – you don’t have to be a tech wizard or a computer genius to harness the power of these tools.

In fact, I bet you’ll be surprised at just how easy (and dare I say, fun!) it can be.

So, whether you’re a seasoned ChatGPT user or a curious newcomer, why not give Claude and Gemini a whirl? Take them for a spin and see how they can help you tackle your real-world writing tasks – whether it’s crafting a compelling email subject line, creating an attention-grabbing social media post, or even outlining that blog article you’ve been meaning to write.

So go ahead, give them all a try. Who knows – you might just discover a whole new way of writing that takes your work to the next level.
